Three Things Your Inner Critic Can Do to Undermine You in MMA and Martial Arts

The inner critic is like an inner ruler: dictating how you should conduct yourself in fight and trying to control the overall strategy you're following. Sun Tzu had something to say about the same problem in the conduct of military affairs. In this, he was referring to the propensity of the nation's Ruler to interfere with the General's plan. Like the Ruler worried about the fate of his nation in war, so too the inner critic has your best interests at heart. The problem is, it may not be the best course of action that it wants you to take...

He advises three situations the General should prevent from arising in relation to the civilian leadership. If translated over to a martial arts context, these could equally apply to your 'inner ruler' (substitute 'inner critic'). Here's what you should avoid:

- Don't let the inner critic goad you into attacking at the wrong time. You'll probably end up leaving yourself wide open. Likewise, don't let it force you into being reticent. You'll miss vital opportunities. Not only that, being over-cautious could mean that you risk losing the entire fight.

- The inner critic doesn't understand of your skill-level, training and experience. It's the part of you that says you're not up to the job! Don't let it interfere with your mindset, otherwise you'll probably lose confidence or become indecisive as to the correct actions to take.

- Likewise, the inner critic doesn't understand your plan of action, tactics and moves. If you let it intervene, it'll again make you lose confidence and cause you to falter. Ignore its interventions and stay focused!

It's easier said than done, of course, especially if you a very harsh inner critic. Counter it by cultivating a powerful inner General to lead and direct you. Put your General in charge and let its calmness and rationality guide you. Remember, you are the one in control, not the Ruler!
